We have all heard the saying, ” Beauty is only skin deep”, well, I personally believe that is false. While most want to have beautiful skin, true beauty is so much more than just a person’s skin.

Did you know that the skin is the largest organ of the body? It has three layers. The epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis (also known as the subcutaneous layer). Each layer has a purpose and function to the body and our overall health and wellness. As we age, the skin, overall, begins to thin.

The epidermis is the top outermost layer. It is our protective barrier against harmful bacteria and germs, a vital part of our immune system. This layer sheds on a regular basis which isn’t an issue because it creates new skin as well. The dermis is the middle layer, in which we have our sweat glands, hair follicles, nerve endings and much more. Our sweat glands help us to regulate our body temperature. The nerve endings help us have the sensation of touch, allowing us to know if something is hot, cold, sharp, or dull. This layer also contains collagen and elastin which helps the skin keep its shape. The hypodermis is the innermost layer. This layer is the fatty layer. It helps cushion the muscles and bones, contains connective tissue as well as helps the nerves and blood vessels. The fatty tissue helps insulate the body keeping you from getting too cold or too hot.

With all that your skin does for you, what can you do to help keep it as healthy as possible? Here are just a few ideas to get you started on a healthier skin routine.

1- Stay hydrated. Seems simple enough, but how much water are you drinking during the day? Are you drinking enough? The recommended amount for the average person is 8 cups or 64 ounces during a 24-hour day. However, that can also vary depend on your daily activity. If you sweat more, you may need to drink more than that. For others, 64 ounces seems more difficult to achieve.

2- Wear sunscreen. It is a known fact that UV rays can damage the skin. Sunburns are no fun for anyone, regardless of age. For young children, applying sunscreen is not as easy as it sounds. However, there are clothing options that have UV protection within the material. This is great for summer activities such as swimming, sunbathing, etc. There are lotions and creams that have UV protection, which can be applied daily. Hats, visors, and sunglasses are also a great option to help with the harmful effects of UV rays.

3- Exfoliate. Sometimes when your skin, epidermis layer, feels dry and flaky, it may just need to be shed. One could use loofas in the shower or bath to help exfoliate. Body scrubs are also a great way to exfoliate the dry, dead skin away. Leaving the new skin soft, and smooth. We offer back and body scrubs as a treatment option to enhance the exfoliation process.

4. Moisturize. The more water you drink during the day, the less likely you will need to add additional moisturization such as lotions or creams. However, there are other ways to help keep the moisture your skin already has as well as add more moisture to your skin. You could take cooler showers instead of steamy hot ones. You could use water-based lotions either scented or unscented. You can try a moisture masque. We offer back and body mud wraps which are a great way to help detox the skin while also adding moisture back into.

If you are interested in scheduling body treatments such as a scrub or mud wrap, just give our office a call or schedule a session online.
